Torrey Pines Climb

Below are predicted times by gender, race category, and age for top riders (climbers) in their category. Top age-groupers are listed alongside equivalent age-unrestricted categories.

The climb is Torrey Pines in San Diego, California. It is timed from the intersection of park roads to the “flashing light.” It is 1.4 miles and 400 feet of climbing.

Times are from personal observation and accounts of riders I know and or coach. Some times may have been set under ideal or strong tail wind conditions.

Just for Fun
Dr. Arnie Baker has a formula to predict VO2 max based on best time up Torrey Pines.
I have compared his formula to climbing times of riders that know their VO2 max from laboratory testing and the outcomes are very close most of the time.
Dr. Baker’s formula:
VO2 max = 360 / Time up Torrey (minutes, in tenths)
For example, climb Torrey in 7 minutes, 30 seconds?
VO2 max=360/7.5=48
